After a virtual ceremony last year, the 2021 BET awards returned to the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 June.
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the show was themed “Year of the Black Woman”.
Queen Latifah was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award, while rapper DMX was honoured with a tribute curated by Swizz Beatz.
When it came to performances, artists brought their A-game, with stars like City Girls, Lil Nas X and Cardi B hitting the stage. There were pregnancy reveals, make-out sessions and a whole lot of flames as performers wowed the small crowd.
Take a look at five must-see acts from the night:
1. Migos and Cardi B
Migos hit the stage for a hot performance on the night – literally, there were flames everywhere. But the highlight of their performance was the moment Cardi B stepped onto stage for their track Type Shit and revealed a baby bump. Of course, upon noticing, the audience immediately went wild.
2. Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X transported us to ancient Egypt with his performance of Montero (Call Me By Your Name). Looking regal in gold, the singer was joined by dancers on stage as he showed off some sultry moves of his own. The performance was sealed with a kiss as Nas made out with one of his dancers at the end.
3. City Girls
There was twerking for days when City Girls performed their hit Twerkulator. Joined by dancers wearing matching booty shorts and crop tops, the duo had the crowd going wild while they shook their “money makers”, as they put it.
4. Tribute to DMX
The stage lights were dimmed as several stars, including Griselda, Swizz Beatz and Method Man, hit the stage to honour rapper DMX by performing a medley of his songs. DMX died on 9 April at the age of 50.
5. Honouring Queen Latifah (recipient of the lifetime achievement award)
Queen Latifah watched from the audience with a massive smile on her face as Lil’ Kim, Monie Love, Rapsody and MC Lyte honoured her by performing a medley of her hits.
South Africans can catch the repeat of the show on BET Africa (DStv 129) on Monday 28 June at 19:00.
